Tragic Drowning Incident at Haig Mill Lake Park | Local News

First responders have recovered the body of a 26-year-old male who drowned Saturday night.

The identity of the victim has not been released yet.

A post from the Dalton Police Department said that there are reports he was kayaking at Haig Mill Lake Park with his brother-in-law.

The victim had removed his life jacket at some point, then swam out into the lake to possibly retrieve a kayak that had drifted away.

The victim reportedly became tired and called for help, eventually sinking beneath the surface of the water.

A person who was fishing on the other side of the lake called 911 around 7:02pm to call for help.

Personnel from the Department of Natural Resources, Gordon County Fire Rescue, and Georgia State Patrol Dive Team searched the water.

Closer to midnight, officials announced the victim’s body was recovered by the dive team. They are in the process of notifying his family.

The Haig Mill Lake Park will be closed Sunday.
