Former Colorado swimming coach sentenced to 42 years to life in prison for sexually abusing girls on his team – Crime Online

A Colorado court sentenced a former elite swimming coach to 42 years to life in prison after he was found guilty of sexually abusing three teenagers on his team.

Jon Beber, 54, was sentenced to 18 years to life in each of two counts of sexual abuse of a child by a person in a position of trust with repeated abuse. He was given a sentence of six years to life in prison in a third count of sexual abuse of a child by a person in a position of trust, the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office said. The sentence must be served consecutively.

“This lengthy prison sentence is the right outcome,” said District Attorney Michael Dougherty. “As the judge noted, cases like this are every parent’s worst nightmare. Parents drop their children off at practice or school and hope that the adults in charge won’t abuse their position of trust. This defendant did just that for years. It is only because of the victims’ courage and persistence that we were able to bring charges all these years later and get justice for them and their families.”

Beber coached Boulder Swimming from 1997 to 2002. As CrimeOnline previously reported, he quit the team and left Colorado when allegations of sexual abuse surfaced at the time. However, no charges were filed and he went on to coach teams in New York, Florida and Georgia.

He was arrested in Atlanta in 2022 after three victims from Colorado came forward. The case went to trial in April and a jury found him guilty.

Beber was also accused of inappropriate behavior toward girls on his Atlanta-area team from 2008 to 2010, but no charges were filed against him, WANF reported.
