By Lt. Dave Mitchell, Iron County Sheriff’s Office

On July 17, 2024, Iron County Sheriff’s officers responded to a shooting incident at a residence in Kanarraville. The incident resulted in the death of a 33-year-old man.

At 7:53 p.m., a 911 call came in from Kyle Jessop, an 18-year-old Kanarraville resident, reporting that he had just shot another man who had attempted to sexually assault him. Jessop then recovered the weapon from the home, cooperated with law enforcement, and was taken into custody without further incident.

The victim was found outside the home and succumbed to his injuries despite the efforts of medical personnel. While searching the scene, officers discovered firearms and illegal substances inside the home. Iron County Sheriff’s crime scene personnel conducted a thorough investigation and the case remains under active investigation at this time.

Kyle Jessop was subsequently questioned by sheriff’s detectives and later booked into the Iron County Jail. He was charged with numerous charges, including possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, and unlawful consumption of alcohol while underage.

The case is ongoing and we are awaiting the results of the autopsy. We will keep you updated as the investigation progresses. We would also like to thank the Cedar City Police Department and Gold Cross EMS for their quick arrival at the scene, as well as the State Bureau of Investigation for their assistance in examining the scene.

The Iron County Sheriff’s Office is committed to ensuring a transparent and thorough investigation of this incident. We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends during this difficult time.
