SUV driver hits two women, killing one, during NYPD chase

An SUV driver fleeing police plowed into and killed a 71-year-old woman as she crossed a street with her daughter in Brooklyn on Thursday night, according to witnesses and police sources.

The victim’s 44-year-old daughter was also struck and injured by the blue Mazda CX-5 with Massachusetts plates at Eldert Street and Knickerbocker Avenue in Bushwick around 5 p.m., police and sources said.

The elderly woman was taken to Wyckoff Hospital, where she died from her injuries, police said.

Her daughter was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition.

After the collision with the victims, the driver, who was wearing a ponytail, fled the scene on foot toward the Halsey Street subway station. However, it is unclear whether he went into hiding, the NYPD said.

According to preliminary police information, he was also wearing a blue T-shirt and blue jeans.

Surveillance footage obtained by the Post shows the blue SUV speeding east through the intersection on Eldert Street and nearly hitting a red car on Knickerbocker Street, with a police car following just seconds behind.

A witness also said she saw a police car chasing the Mazda leading up to the accident.

“It was very fast when the police gave chase, this vehicle was very fast,” said Sandra Villaman, pointing to the crashed Mazda.

“I saw the two ladies on the ground,” the woman said, adding that first responders attempted to revive them at the scene.

The owner of a white van hit by a Mazda in a hit-and-run described the scene as “sad and painful” as he heard a crash and left his home.

“I came out and saw my van was pushed against the tree and I just ran here and as I ran here the ladies were on the ground,” said witness Rodrigo Gonzalez.

“One of them was having convulsions…they were performing CPR on the elderly woman and the man had already run away.”
