Jury selection continues for Denver cardiologist charged with drug-related date rape

Jury selection in the case of Denver cardiologist Stephen Matthews was completed Friday afternoon without a jury being impaneled, but the judge overseeing the case expects a jury to be impaneled by Monday morning.

Matthews is accused of 38 felonies. Prosecutors allege that he contacted women through dating apps such as Hinge and Tinder between 2019 and 2023. He is accused of drugging 11 women he met online and sexually assaulting nine of them.

The 36-year-old doctor has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Judge Eric Johnson, prosecutors and defense attorneys are working to select a jury from an initial pool of 160 potential jurors. The goal is to select 12 jurors and four alternates.

After completing questionnaires on Friday, several potential jurors were rejected because of their ties to Colorado law enforcement.

During Friday’s trial, prosecutors and defense attorneys introduced themselves to the jury. Two of Matthews’ attorneys expressed how proud they were to represent him. Matthews, wearing a blue button-down shirt and tie, waved to the jury.

After potential jurors were dismissed for the weekend, Matthews returned to the Denver jail, where he is being held on $5 million bail.
