Edison, NJ Police mourn the loss of Lt. Donald Ship

EDISON – Lt. Donald Ship, a 13-year veteran of the Edison Police Department who spent part of his career bridging the gap between the department and the community, has died, the police department announced on Facebook Wednesday.

“Lieutenant Ship grew up in Edison and dedicated his entire life and career to giving back to the community in which he grew up,” the post said.

Details of his funeral have not yet been released. The police department’s post did not say when or how Ship died.

Ship began his career in law enforcement as a police officer at Kean University before joining the Edison Police Department in January 2011, where he was assigned to the patrol division and served as a trainer for new field employees, the police department’s complaint states.

In October 2020, Ship was promoted to sergeant and tasked with reopening the Community Policing Unit, where he worked to bring police and the community together by spearheading charity events that provided meals, furniture and Christmas toys to families in need.
