A heat advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday, while more than 2 million CenterPoint customers in the Houston area are still without power Tuesday morning.

Parts of southeast Texas are under a heat advisory a day after Hurricane Beryl slammed into the coast, killing three people.

The National Weather Service has warned that people who engage in strenuous outdoor activities and do not have air conditioning could suffer from heat-related illnesses.

Temperatures are expected to rise to 32°C on Tuesday. The heat index is expected to reach 40°C, due to light winds and persistent humidity from Beryl.

“While this level is normally below the criteria for a heat advisory, the widespread outage of power and air conditioning in Southeast Texas could create dangerous conditions throughout the day,” the weather service said.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said CenterPoint should provide a timeline for power restoration by Tuesday, at which time the county plans to open shelters for affected residents.

The weather service recommends that Houston residents drink plenty of water, limit outdoor activities, work earlier or later in the day, and wear sunscreen and light-colored clothing.
