Man in hospital, dog dead after fire in house in San Fernando Valley

An elderly man was hospitalized and a dog was killed when a fire broke out at a home in the Valley Village neighborhood on Sunday.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire was reported shortly after 12:15 a.m. in the 4900 block of N. Beeman Avenue.

Emergency crews were dispatched after being notified of the fire by an alarm company. When they arrived, they found a shed at the front of a one-story home engulfed in flames, the LAFD said in a statement.

While some firefighters fought the fire, others entered the house and rescued the elderly man who lived inside.

“The man, who suffered burns to his head, received medical treatment at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital in good condition,” the LAFD said.

After the flames were extinguished at around 12:45 a.m., firefighters re-entered the house and found the man’s dead dog inside.

No further injuries were reported.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
