Edmonton basketball coach allegedly sexually abused 16-year-old girl

A 48-year-old basketball coach who has been coaching in Edmonton since 2015 has been charged after police accused him of sexually abusing a teenage player.

According to Edmonton police, a 16-year-old girl filed a sexual assault complaint against her basketball coach last month.

She says it happened earlier this year in a hotel during a basketball development camp outside Edmonton.

Police were told that the coach encouraged the teenager to consume alcohol and hallucinogenic drugs.

“While he was drunk, he sexually assaulted the plaintiff,” EPS claims in a press release.

Ronald William Olson, 48, was charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation, administration of a noxious substance and possession of a controlled drug. He has since been released on conditions, including prohibition on contact with anyone under the age of 16.

He is scheduled to appear in court in Edmonton on Wednesday. Police believe there may be other plaintiffs.
