Sumner Tunnel to be closed for the next month for further repairs – Boston 25 News

BOSTON – The Sumner Tunnel from East Boston and Logan Airport to downtown Boston has been closed since Friday morning and will remain closed for the next month while MassDOT crews and contractors conduct additional work inside the aging tunnel.

The closure will last 24 hours a day until August 5. Commuters are asked to use alternative routes.

“The closure is the next phase of a project that began in April 2022 and includes work on the tunnel ceiling, roadway, walls, lighting and other improvements that increase safety and climate resilience,” MassDOT said. The cost of the work is $160 million.

The full closure this year will be comparable to a similar closure in 2023. Here are some of the other options available to commuters:

• Free rides on the MBTA Blue Line.

• Free and discounted MBTA water ferry options.

• Discounted MBTA Commuter Rail fares on the Newburyport-Rockport route.

• Free service for customers boarding Chelsea’s major bus routes, including Silver Line 3.

• Discounted parking in select MBTA and Commuter Rail lots and garages.

• MBTA RIDE trips that begin and end within ¾ mile of free MBTA services will also be free from July 5 through August 5.

• Reduced toll fees for Resident Discount Program participants.

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates as more information becomes available.
