Police received a call about a “severe” shark bite on the man’s leg.

A man was attacked by a shark in the waters off South Padre Island in Texas on July 4, police said.

South Padre Island police said they received a call about a “severe” shark bite to the leg near the 4100 block of Gulf Boulevard around 11 a.m. local time Thursday.

First responders from the South Padre Island police and fire department treated the man at the scene before he was taken to a nearby hospital, police said. A police spokesman did not provide any further information on the man’s condition.

Footage captured by a beachgoer who witnessed the incident showed a shark swimming close to the shore near the attack.
