Houston Texans fandom is passionate but they lack decibels

The Houston Texans have been a great addition to the city of Houston. Debuting in the city in 2002, replacing the famed Houston Oilers who had moved to Nashville, the Texans were embraced by the city. Through winning and losing seasons, the fandom has persisted. Despite the chaos and controversy, the fandom has remained.

Now, after years of yearning for more wins, deeper playoff runs and players capable of defining a generation, it all seems to be coming to Millhouse. The club has a franchise quarterback, a franchise defensive end, a young and energetic head coach and a direction that the fandom truly supports.

This is the team of tomorrow, but of today. As a product on the field, they’re there, but relative to the larger concept of league-wide importance, the Texans have room to improve. They are gaining ground, with the club being one of the most important in the immediate future, but its profile is not as impeccable as others. Not yet, anyway. Over time, we hope to see this change.

A team’s rise to the top of its image allows it to build an aura, a reputation that goes with it. Two top teams, the Seattle Seahawks and the Kansas City Chiefs, are known for having nearly impossible home games. When these clubs win, you can’t walk onto their field without coming away with a slight ringing in your ears.

These stadiums are noisy. Not just because of the stadium design, but also because of the passion of the fandom. Hopefully the Texas fandom can generate this type of atmosphere soon. However, according to Give Me Sports, they are far from being one of those top tier stadiums. When opposing teams come to Houston, they simply don’t have to worry about sounding the same as Seattle or Kansas City.

The Texans are not in the top 10 loudest stadiums in the NFL. Knowing that hearing is very important when playing American football, being able to disrupt that noise would give your home defense an advantage. If the opposing offense cannot hear, it cannot perform to its full potential.

So it would be nice to see the Texans fandom get a little stronger, especially this season. You never know what play could turn the tide of a big game.
