Hudson County residents received an Amber Alert. It has been canceled.

An Amber Alert was sent out for a missing child in Hudson County and North Jersey after 2 a.m. The alert has been lifted. Here’s why.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — An Amber Alert that awakened some Hudson County residents in the early hours of Friday has been lifted and authorities say the matter has been resolved.

The 2-year-old Paterson boy who was the subject of the alert was found safe and sound. The alert, sent to cellphones, was lifted around 6 a.m., police told media.

Amber Alerts are issued rarely and only when it is critical to find a child whose life may be in “grave danger,” authorities say. The alerts ask residents to search for a person or license plate number.

“AMBER Alerts are not intended for all missing child, runaway or custody cases, and it is the responsibility of all law enforcement agencies to ensure that the AMBER Alert system is not abused,” the State of New Jersey explains.

Amber stands for America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response and is also named after 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, who was abducted while riding her bike in Arlington, Texas in 1996. She was later found murdered.

While some Amber Alerts have been lifted, others have ended tragically. Sometimes the cases begin after the child’s parent is found dead in a domestic violence incident, including a case in New Jersey in 2021.
