$237,000 NYSS 3-Year-Old Trots Held at Buffalo Raceway

HAMBURG, New York — The front was the perfect place on a rainy Wednesday afternoon (June 26) to Buffalo Speedway while a pair of big-money New York Sire Stakes races were captured in wire-to-wire harness racing style.

Super Duper CooperEL Titan – Pink Power) was “super” in winning the $119,800 event for 3-year-old trotters and geldings, while sister Mary Maude (Crazy Wow-Perfect Mass) was victorious in the $117,700 race for 3-year-old trotting fillies.

With the rain starting to fall just before the featured trotting races, the track went from fast to sloppy.

Super Duper Cooper (Jason Bartlett) took the lead in the field and ran fractions of :29.2, :59.2 and 1:29.4 in the first test. Keep Asking (Tyler Buter) sat in the pocket in second while Victor Laszlo (Mark MacDonald) was first and in contention with one last panel to play.

But Super Duper Cooper remained strong at the front and slowed down the timid rallies of Keep Asking and Victor Laszlo who had to settle for second and third place respectively. His margin of victory was 1-1/4 lengths.

Owned by Timothy Drag, James Crawford and Carl Austin Jr., Super Duper Cooper is trained by John Butenschoen. The victory, the third in six attempts in 2024, increased Super Duper Cooper’s seasonal earnings to $100,248 and $200,357 in his career. He paid $4.00 to win.

In the women’s main event, Sister Mary Maude (Ronnie Wrenn Jr.) let Sadbirdstillsing enjoy the top for a few steps before regaining the lead heading into the first quarter. With times of :29.3, :59.4 and 1:29.3 posted, Sister Mary Maude was on the lookout for threats heading into Buffalo Raceway’s long straight. None came to fruition.

With Sadbirdstillsing (Buter) and Winning Alliance (Todd Ratchford) nearly two lengths back at the top of the lane, Sister Mary Maude easily stayed focused on her task and took the convincing 2 1/2 length decision.

Owned by Burke Racing Stable, William Switala, James Martin and Weaver Bruscemi, it was Sister Mary Maude’s first win of the year after five consecutive second-place finishes. This victory brought his seasonal capital to $116,090 and $232,548 for life. She paid $4.20 to win.

In the $20,000 Excelsior Series races for 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings, Woweress (Buter) scored a neck-and-neck victory over Pepper Wow in 1:58.1 while Tobern (John Stark Jr.) posted a $20.00 surprise with a stunning 8-1/4 length score over Promises Met (Jim Morrill Jr.) in 1:59.1.

In the sophomore ladies category, Communion Money (Jared Bako) scored a 9-1/4 length victory over Shirin (Hunter Myers) in 1:58.3 while Osodevious (Bartlett) defeated Really Don’t Care (MacDonald) in 2:01.0.

In the $14,000 Open Pace for fillies and mares, Flip The Script went from last to first and beat Center Attraction (James McNeight Jr.) by a mere nose in 1:57.4. Drew Monti rode the winner to triumph at $15.60.

Racing will resume Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. with 12 races scheduled.
