Retired Chicago police officer killed: Vigil for Larry Neuman, 73, after fatal shooting in West Garfield Park

CHICAGO (WLS) — The community came together on Sunday for a powerful prayer march and vigil in honor of retired Chicago police officer Larry Neuman.

Neuman was working in his yard in West Garfield Park earlier this week when he was shot.

Dozens of people gathered on the streets on Sunday and called on the shooters to turn themselves in.

“He was a great man, just a great man,” said Deacon Albert Henderson. “He was a veteran. He was a Chicago police officer. He was the pastor of our church.”

Members of Neuman’s church joined city and state leaders, gathered outside St. Michael Missionary Baptist Church and marched to the site where he was shot, in the 4300 block of West Monroe Street.

ABC7 was told the fatal shooting may have occurred during a robbery.

“I know that as a community we can come together not only to mourn, but also to make amends together,” said Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.

Those gathered there on Sunday sought a path to healing while honoring the legacy Neuman leaves behind.

“When you look around here now, his loss is actually a blessing because when you see how everyone is coming together now, this is the beginning of something,” said Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling.

Chicago police released video Saturday of two suspects wanted in connection with the fatal gun death. The video shows a man wearing a dark hoodie and Jordan shoes. Police said the suspects are between 16 and 21 years old.

A total reward of $75,000 is being offered for information that could lead to an arrest and conviction.

Rewards are offered by the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, ATF Chicago and FBI Chicago.
