Helicopter accident near Wawa triggers investigation

The Transportation Safety Board has dispatched two investigators to the scene of the accident; no information is currently available on injuries or the cause of last Thursday’s incident

A helicopter accident that occurred in the Wawa area last Thursday prompted the Canadian Transportation Safety Board to send two investigators to the scene.

Details are currently limited, but the TSB said the incident involved a Eurocopter AS350 B2 helicopter.

When reached by SooToday A TSB spokesperson said by email that there had been no response from investigators as they most likely had no reception.

What caused the accident, how many people were involved and how serious the injuries were is currently unclear.

According to Airbus Helicopters Canada, the single-engine multi-role aircraft can perform a wide range of missions, including passenger transport, aerial work, training, observation, firefighting and law enforcement, among others.

The cabin can accommodate a pilot and up to six passengers.

TSB investigators have been on site since Sunday and are collecting information.

Helicopter accidents are common in the Wawa area, and the TSB recently released its findings on a fatal incident in 2023 in which a ground crew member became entangled in a helicopter tow rope.

When the pilot took off, the crew member was suddenly dragged along and crashed to his death.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.
