Wake, funeral and prayer service planned for teenager who died in bicycle accident in parking garage

HARRISON – Friends and family plan to come together to remember 13-year-old Mark Anthony Giordano, who died Sunday in an electric bike accident.

Giordano’s wake will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with a viewing to follow at McMahon Funeral Home on Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Gregory’s Church on Halstead Avenue in Harrison, according to the Harrison HS Wrestling Instagram account.

His wrestling coaches and teammates will honor their fallen comrade with a prayer service at St. Gregory’s Church on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The teenager lost control of his electric bike on the roof of the fifth floor of a public parking garage, MTA police said. He was found on the ground floor next to the parking garage, police said.

“All are welcome to join in and reflect on the lives we have lost,” said an Instagram post from Harrison HS Wrestling, an account run by Harrison wrestling supporters.

At around 5:47 p.m. on Sunday, Giordano and four other people were on the roof of the fifth floor of the Harrison public parking garage, an MTA police statement said. He lost control of his electric bike and landed on the ground floor.

Giordano wrestled for Harrison Central High School and qualified for the Section 1 tournament in the 215-pound class this season.

Doctors at White Plains Hospital pronounced Giordano dead. The other minors were not injured and a preliminary investigation revealed no criminal activity, according to MTA police.

Harrison school inspector honors teenager

Louis N. Wool, the Harrison School District superintendent, released a statement on the district’s website. He said Giordano “was loved by his teachers, coaches and friends. Our outstanding teachers, coaches and SROs immediately stepped in to support his family and our students.”

“In moments of extraordinary tragedy, I am always comforted by the generosity and love our community shows to those most in need and to each other,” Wool said.

The announcement for the prayer service read: “Grief never ends… But it changes. It is a transition, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness or lack of faith. It is the price of love.”

The Harrison HS Wrestling Facebook page paid tribute to Giordano.

“Mark was an incredible young man who accomplished so much in such a short period of time,” the post said. “His potential on the mat and the soccer field seemed limitless. But beyond his athletic ability, Mark was always kind, respectful, and a loving teammate, brother, and son. During this difficult time, we should keep Mark’s mother Michelle and sister Liza in our thoughts and prayers and offer them our support however we can.”
