Former choir director of the Pius XI College accused of sexually abusing a student

MILWAUKEE – A former choir teacher at the Pius XI Church is accused of sexually harassing a student. The allegations date back more than a year.

The investigation began in May 2023. The former choir director is accused of inappropriate touching and remarks towards girls.

At the time, the Pius XI administration sent a letter to parents informing them of the investigation – and that longtime deputy John Anshus was being placed on leave. Anshus was fired during the investigation, according to court records.

In February 2024, investigators received new information that Anshus had assaulted a student. Prosecutors charged Anshus on Wednesday, June 12, with sexual abuse of a student by school personnel and exposure of his genitals.

It is unclear whether Anshus has a lawyer who can speak on his behalf.

A spokesman for Pius XI said in a statement on Wednesday that they were aware of the allegations – and added that the school had nothing further to add.

Anshus is scheduled to make his first appearance in Milwaukee County Court on June 28 to face the charges.
