16-year-old shot in park near Madison Community Center

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A shooting in a public park has left 16-year-old Justin Robinson fighting for his life in the hospital. City police say the teen, who was in critical condition at Skyline Medical Center, has since died.

Don Aaron, spokesman for the Metro Police, said it all started in the Madison Community Center park.

On Wednesday afternoon, two rival groups of youths met, a fight broke out and two youths started shooting at each other. A 16-year-old was shot in the chest.

“It’s a concerning phenomenon that young people are owning guns,” Aaron said. “It’s really no different than the scenario at Red Caboose Park in Bellevue a few weeks ago. These young people have gotten hold of guns, start uttering disrespectful words, and then all of a sudden guns are being pulled out and one side starts shooting and the other side is firing shots.”

Aaron said the victim was picked up by a passing motorist who was not involved in the accident. They took him and another juvenile to the hospital.

Cassandra Compton learned what had happened when she went to pick up her young children from summer camp.

“It’s crazy because kids can’t be kids,” she said. “We have three kids who go to this center and they could have been outside when this happened.”

“Put down your guns because too many people are dying,” added father Nick Sims, who was with Cassandra and the children. “Too many children are reaching for guns. These are just senseless murders.”

The officers are now looking for the other young people involved.

I think we can all remember our favorite teachers. They leave a mark on our lives in so many ways. Have your tissues ready to read Forrest Sanders’ story about Mrs. McMurray. She invested so much in her students and their love returned to them when they needed it most.
