One dead and five injured in chase in city center

A chase through downtown Graham left one man dead and several others injured.

Around 5 p.m. on Saturday, Graham Police were notified of a suspected reckless driver near Walmart. A Graham Police officer identified the vehicle, a gray Chevrolet Silverado, and attempted to make a traffic stop.

The alleged reckless driver ignored the officer’s right of way and increased speed while traveling north on Elm Street.

At the intersection of Elm and South Streets, the driver lost control of his vehicle, struck another vehicle, and crashed into an occupied residence in the 800 block of Elm Street. The driver of the struck vehicle was uninjured.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Five residents of the house were injured, treated at the scene and then taken to Graham Regional Medical Center for further medical treatment.

“At this time, none of the five injured are believed to have life-threatening injuries,” the city of Graham said in a press release.

A person in the home suffered head and facial injuries as a result of the accident and was flown by helicopter to Harris Methodist Hospital.

In addition to the GPD, officers from the Young County Sheriff’s Office, Graham EMS and the Graham Fire Department also assisted on scene.

The names of the dead and injured have not yet been released.

The GPD has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the crash and is being assisted by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The Graham Leader will continue to follow this story and provide updates as information becomes available.
