WALL – Anger and jealousy appear to have driven a man to fatally attack his girlfriend in the parking lot of their apartment complex, nearly severing her arm.

Alex Williams, 24, of Wall, repeatedly hacked at the woman with an axe-like blade on May 23 at the Glen Oaks apartment complex near Allenwood Road, causing “multiple significant injuries,” said Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago.

She was initially charged with attempted murder, but after 29-year-old Brianna Greenwood succumbed to her injuries a week later, the charge was upgraded to premeditated murder.

According to authorities, Greenwood had called the police at least once in the previous three months about her crazy ex.

According to the criminal complaint and probable cause affidavit, Williams and Greenwood, who had been together for seven months, argued about their relationship in the parking lot.

“You cheated on me, you cheated on me, you bitch, you cheated on me,” Williams allegedly screamed at Greenwood.

Another resident called 911 when Williams began attacking her with what she thought was a baseball bat.

Police found Greenwood sitting leaning against Williams’ car. According to the affidavit, officers said her left arm was almost completely severed above the wrist. She also had several cuts on her face.

Greenwood’s three-year-old daughter was in her mother’s car and witnessed the attack. The machete used in the attack was found nearby.

“I will obey, so come and pick me up”

Police found Williams sitting on a bench in the complex. When an officer asked Williams if he had argued with his girlfriend, he repeated the accusation of infidelity. Before officers found Williams, he called 911 and told police he had “just killed his girlfriend.”

“I will obey, just come and pick me up,” he told the dispatcher.

beginning of the year

On February 24, Greenwood police were called, who told police Williams had vandalized her home, stolen her phone, and prevented her from leaving the house or calling 911 during an argument. Williams was charged with simple assault, criminal damage, false imprisonment, theft, and harassment in that incident.

He is being held at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution.

In a GoFundMe fundraiser, Greenwood was described as a “vibrant soul whose life was tragically cut short by a senseless act of violence.” She also has an 8-year-old daughter.

Greenwood underwent 18 hours of surgery after the attack but died a week later, on May 30, according to the fundraiser.
