1 dead in three-car crash on Capital Beltway in Silver Spring: Police

The crash on the inner loop of Georgia Avenue injured several other people and closed lanes for several hours, authorities said.

SILVER SPRING, MD — A three-car crash on the Capital Beltway in Silver Spring Wednesday morning claimed one person’s life, injured several others and caused traffic delays for hours, according to police and reports.

According to Maryland State Police, patrol officers responded to the crash on the inner loop of Interstate 495 at Georgia Avenue around 3 a.m. According to police, the crash occurred when a Honda Accord collided with a Jeep Wrangler and a Honda Civic while entering I-495 from southbound Georgia Avenue.

The drivers of all three vehicles and two passengers in the Civic were taken to hospital for treatment, police said.

According to authorities, a passenger in the Accord was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Due to debris from the accident, authorities were forced to close all three lanes of the Beltway for several hours, causing significant delays on the outer loop that leads to Interstate 95.

Shortly after 7:30 a.m. all lanes were reopened

Authorities have not yet released the name of the person killed in the crash. The cause is still under investigation.
