May 6, 2024 11:15 p.m

On Monday, May 6, 2024, at approximately 5:15 p.m., the Portland Police Bureau’s Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) served a search warrant at a residence in the 100 block of Southeast 124th Avenue. The arrest warrant was related to an investigation by the Major Crimes Unit. At approximately 6:34 p.m., an adult male shot at officers while serving the search warrant. The officers returned fire and struck the suspect. A SERT paramedic attended the scene and immediately initiated life-saving measures, but the suspect was pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m. A firearm was found near the suspect.

No officers were injured in this incident. All four directly involved will be placed on paid administrative leave. This is standard protocol after an officer-involved shooting.

Per PPB instructions, Portland Police Homicide Unit investigators responded to the scene to investigate the situation.

Chief Bob Day responded to the scene and informed Mayor Wheeler’s staff and the District Attorney’s Office of the investigation.

“I am grateful that our officers are going home safely tonight,” Chief Day said while speaking to media at the scene. “These incidents highlight the risks our people take every day.”

As part of the use of force review process, the office conducts an internal review of the entire incident, including the initial response, resources requested, tactics used, and post-shooting actions. The case will be presented to the Police Review Board (PRB), which is made up of community members, members of the bureau and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division.
