Iowa DCI investigates death at western Iowa prison

The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is investigating the death of a 61-year-old man who was incarcerated at a county jail in western Iowa. Denison Police Department officers arrested the man on public intoxication charges around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The man was booked into the Crawford County Jail and placed in a solitary cell. According to a DCI release, Crawford County Jail staff were conducting a scheduled welfare check on the man around 9 a.m. Monday morning when they discovered he was unresponsive. Jail personnel, sheriff’s deputies and emergency medical services performed CPR and the man was transported to Crawford County Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. According to the DCI, a family member identified the man as Abraham Gatwech Ngor of Denison. The state medical examiner will conduct an autopsy. The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office has assigned the DCI to investigate.
