Candy store owner remembers 13-year-old boy killed on his bike as he left the store – WPXI

BUFFALO TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania — Robert Wyant, owner of Cozmic Candy Shop, said when he opened his store in Buffalo Township about a year and a half ago, 13-year-old Dylan Tarbi immediately became a regular customer.

“He always got freeze-dried candy. That’s how I remember it,” Wyant said. “They always got a different bag.”

Wyant got to know Tarbi quite well.

“He was just a good kid,” Wyant said. “He wasn’t shy. He had confidence. He looked like a go-getter, and from what I understand his nickname was Turbo.”

Dylan and his friend, also 13, stopped at the store to buy candy on Friday night, shortly before they were both hit by a pickup truck.

Wyant redeemed it.

“They’re nice kids. I could tell they come from a good family. They’re very polite,” Wyant said. “I know when they left here they were happy and they said they didn’t know what they were going to do on the weekend except eat candy.”

This changed a short time later, about half a mile away.

Police said the two 13-year-old boys were riding their bikes home when they were struck by a pickup truck on Cole Road. The driver said he did not see them.

Katie Matson was taking out the trash when she saw all the first responders a few doors down.

“I saw about six or seven ambulances, fire trucks and a lot of lights from over there, and I saw them doing CPR on the boy,” Matson said. “I was shocked. I was watching very carefully.”

According to police, Tarbi was flown to hospital, where he later died. His friend was not seriously injured.

“This is obviously a tragedy, it’s terrible,” said Katie Matson’s husband Nash Matson. “I’m not surprised that there was an accident here.”

According to police, the accident occurred on a sunny day around 7 p.m. Investigators believe the sun was shining in the driver’s eyes when he hit the two boys, who were all traveling west.

Neighbors on Cole Road told Channel 11’s Antoinette DelBel that the sun is blinding at sunset.

“It’s just not the safest road,” said Nash Matson.

Wyant, on the other hand, wants to help Tarbi’s family. He wants to put a donation box on the counter of his candy store.

“They supported us, so I just want to be there for them and support them,” Wyant said. “They definitely won’t be forgotten here.”

The driver remained at the scene and is not facing any charges at this time. Buffalo Township Police Chief Tim Derringer said he does not believe speed played a role in the crash, but the investigation is ongoing.
