Motorcyclist killed in back-to-back crashes on Egg Harbor Township Highway

A motorcyclist was killed by an oncoming car that struck him shortly after he fell off his motorcycle on a New Jersey highway late Saturday night, police said.

Egg Harbor Township police said James Geloso, 58, of Pitman, died from fatal injuries when he fell from his motorcycle on Black Horse Pike in 2004 and was then struck by a Cadillac sedan.

Both accidents occurred around 11:44 p.m. on the pike in front of Story Book Land, a children’s theme park on the highway between Fernwood and Ridge avenues.

Geloso was eastbound on the Pike in front of the park when his motorcycle left the road and entered the grassy median. He lost control of his bike, which then hit a sign and flipped onto its side, throwing Geloso into traffic, police said.

While a witness called 911, the sedan, driven by a 63-year-old man from Egg Harbor Township, struck both the motorcycle and Geloso, police said.

The highway was detoured for about five hours, police said. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

More than 6,000 motorcyclists were killed on American roads in 2022, police said, citing data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. These accidents accounted for 15% of fatal accidents that year.
