A student was killed and several injured in a traffic accident in Nantong, east China’s Jiangsu Province, on Friday. Authorities said initial investigations showed faulty signals and careless driving were the main cause.

The accident occurred when a bus carrying 45 passengers, including 39 students, collided with a dump truck. The students belonged to a primary school in Nantong’s Chongchuan district and were on their way to an art festival exhibition on Friday.

Eight people, including six students, were injured in the accident.

Rapid relief efforts were initiated following the accident, with local authorities immediately dispatching rescue workers. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Unfortunately, a student died from the serious injuries he sustained in the accident.

Officials from the Nantong Traffic Police told the media on Saturday that the accident occurred at the intersection of Panxiang Road and Hongjiang Road in Chongchuan District. It turned out that both the bus and the dump truck were traveling in their respective lanes before the collision.

However, a faulty traffic light at the intersection led to the incident. The bus, traveling from north to south at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour, was unable to stop at the intersection because the signal was not working and the driver was not attentive. At the same time, the dump truck, which was traveling from west to east at a speed of over 50 kilometers per hour, collided with the right front part of the bus. The driver of the dump truck was taken under control pending further investigation because he was driving the vehicle in the restricted area in violation of regulations.

In response to the incident, Nantong local officials immediately formed an accident investigation team and conducted an investigation to determine responsibility for the accident. Subsequent actions require strict enforcement of relevant laws and regulations to hold those responsible accountable.
