Woman found dead on picnic table in park pavilion

Police are investigating the 19-year-old’s death as a homicide.

A 19-year-old woman was found dead on a picnic table under a gazebo in a North Carolina park, police said.

The woman was found around 7:27 p.m. Sunday evening when Greensboro Police Department officers were called to the 2900 block of Haig Street after a caller expressed concern about “an individual lying on a picnic table under a gazebo in the park at this location,” according to a statement from the Greensboro Police Department detailing the incident.

“The caller reported that the subject was not moving. The caller stated that he heard what he believed to be fireworks approximately one hour prior,” the statement said. “Upon closer inspection, the caller reported that the subject was not breathing and had injuries that the caller described as gunshot wounds.”

The police immediately went to the crime scene, where they found the victim – later identified as 19-year-old Jakala Marie Goode – and pronounced her dead at the scene.

Police are investigating Goode’s death as a homicide, but have not released any possible motives or suspects in the case.

This is the 22nd homicide in Greensboro this year and police are asking anyone with information to call Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.
