Texans sent 8 teams to 2024 NFL Championships

80 young people will represent H-Town this weekend on the field.

The 2024 NFL Flag Football Championships kick off Thursday in Canton, Ohio, as 280 teams from across North America gather to see who’s the best at flag football.

The games will be broadcast on ESPN and ABC, and it is a tournament in which all 32 teams will be represented.

Most of those teams are all girls, while others are coed. The Texans, like the rest of the NFL, have made a big push to provide more opportunities for girls to play football. This spring, they developed two high school leagues comprised of teams from a total of 22 schools. The investment of time and resources into the game has been especially meaningful to the franchise’s co-founder and senior president, Janice McNair.

Since the Texans, eight teams have headed north, ranging from a 9-and-under team called the “Relentless” to an 18-and-under club called the “Liberty City Warriors.” The Texans even sent a team to the International Division, called “Team Mexico,” to compete for Houston. All of those Texans teams came from a regional tournament in December. What started with 90 clubs from across the region has been whittled down to the eight regional champions, who now have their sights set on national titles at the 2024 NFL Championship Game.

Before their departure, each player representing the Texans received a bucket hat, sunglasses, shirts and other Texans items for the trip.

The NFL football championships began in the 1990s and the tournament has continued to grow. This year marked the first time the games were televised on national networks and the first time they were held in Canton, home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
