AUCC Welcomes Director/Conductor of the Atlanta University Symphony Orchestra

Dr. Alvoy L. Bryan Jr. will join the Atlanta University Center Consortium, leading an orchestra of Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse CollegeAnd Spelman students.

ATLANTA, July 22, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Dr. Alvoy L. Bryan Jr. has been selected to conduct the Atlanta University Center Orchestra and will debut in July. The Atlanta University Center Consortium will host Decatur native and orchestral professional with teaching experience at all levels including lower and higher education. Bryan’s uniqueness for this position includes a plethora of experience not only playing with orchestras in Atlanta and throughout the country, but as an instructor.

He is a violist, violinist and conductor with over 19 years of experience as a conductor and over 22 years of experience as a professional orchestral and chamber musician.

Bryan has extensive experience in higher education, having served on the faculty of Allen University (Associate Professor and Director of the Music Department), Benedict College (Coordinator of the music department), South Carolina State UniversityClaflin University, Presbyterian CollegeAnd Webster University. His formal musical training includes a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from Indiana University (Bloomington)IN), an MM in musical interpretation of the University of North Carolina at Greensboroand a DMA in Music Performance from the University of South Carolina.

“It’s like a homecoming for me. My goal is to make this organization one of the best orchestras in the country, recruiting the best string players. Georgia and build a reputation with students from across the country who come to pursue professional music education,” Bryan said.

The Atlanta University Center Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1997 and is a vital part of the musical tapestry at Atlanta University Center, as music students are expected to be part of a large ensemble of instruments and for students who play string instruments such as violin, viola, cello and double bass, it is their only musical outlet.

“This is my life’s journey; I want to create the next generation of orchestra members and teachers. Less than three percent of musicians in professional orchestras are Black and I want to highlight and introduce students to Black composers like William Grant Still, Duke Ellington, Florence Beatrice Price“Dr. George Theophilus Walker and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor to name a few,” Bryan said.
