Rachel Minaya, wife of Yankees manager Omar, found dead in her New Jersey home

Rachel Minaya, the wife of former Mets general manager and current Yankees manager Omar Minaya, was found dead in her New Jersey home on Saturday, according to a person briefed on the family.

Omar Minaya was not at home at the time of his wife’s death.

According to the person informed by the family, suicide could be ruled out as the cause of death.

The Minayas have two adult sons, Justin and Teddy.

Justin is a forward for the Portland Trail Blazers and has been playing for their summer league team in Las Vegas this month.

According to a 2007 Sports Illustrated profile, Omar met Rachel in 1989 at a Manhattan hair salon.

Within a year, they became engaged during a trip to Italy.

Omar Minaya joined the Yankees in early 2023 as a senior advisor to general manager Brian Cashman after serving as general manager of the Mets from 2004-10 and as special assistant to several GMs in Queens from 2017-20.

The 65-year-old was previously GM of the Montreal Expos before the franchise moved to Washington and became the Nationals. He also worked as a scout for the Texas Rangers from 2011 to 2015 and as vice president of baseball operations for the San Diego Padres.

Known for his talent as a scout, Omar Minaya was hired as GM of the Mets after the 2004 season and during his tenure signed players such as Carlos Beltran and Pedro Martinez, helping the club reach the 2006 NLCS.

The Dominican native, who grew up in Queens, also oversaw the drafts that landed the Mets some homegrown talent that helped them reach the 2015 World Series, including Jacob deGrom and Matt Harvey.

With the Yankees, Minaya spent some time in the major leagues, but also traveled to minor league affiliate teams and overseas to serve as an extra pair of eyes for Cashman.

He is one of three former GMs in the team’s front office, along with Brian Sabean and Jim Hendry.

In between his stints with the Mets, Minaya served in the Padres’ front office from 2011 to 2015, making him a valuable voice when the Yankees completed a trade with the Padres for Juan Soto in December.

He then spent three years as a senior advisor to Tony Clark, executive director of the MLB Players Association, before returning to Queens under Sandy Alderson.

Before joining the Yankees, Minaya also worked for a year as an amateur scouting consultant for the MLB.
