Woman stabbed at Miami International Airport, 1 person arrested

A woman suffered serious injuries in a knife attack at Miami International Airport late Saturday night, CNN reported, citing the Miami-Dade Police Department.

The incident led to the evacuation of two airport halls, but normal airport operations have since resumed, according to a press release on Sunday morning.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. (local time) on the fourth floor of Terminal J.

The suspect, a man, is said to have stabbed the victim several times and tried to throw him over the railing, the press release said.

“Without provocation, the perpetrator attacked the victim by stabbing her multiple times and attempting to throw her over the railing,” the press release states. “The victim was able to escape the attack and ran down the stairs to the 3rd floor where officers found her.”

The suspect was arrested at the scene, police said. Authorities also confiscated a knife from him.

The injured victim was taken by the Miami-Dade Fire Department to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition, CNN reported.

In response to the incident, passengers were evacuated from Concourses H and J in the airport’s South Terminal as a precautionary measure. Operations resumed after all passengers were rescreened.

“We would like to reassure the public that the situation is under control and the safety of our passengers, employees and visitors remains our top priority,” the airport said in a statement. “The authorities responded immediately and the situation was quickly brought under control.”

Miami-Dade police stressed that the investigation into the attack is ongoing and clarified that initial reports that an active shooter was involved during the chaos were unfounded.

Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) noted a decline in cases of unruly passengers, with over 2,000 reported in 2023, a 15 percent drop from the previous year. However, nearly 900 incidents have been reported so far in 2024, suggesting that challenges remain despite significant declines since the peak in early 2021.

“The number of incidents involving improper passenger conduct has steadily declined by over 80 percent since the record high in early 2021, but recent increases show that more work remains,” the government said, according to CNN.
