74-year-old man killed after pointing gun at police in Loxley: BCSO

BALDWIN COUNTY, Alabama (WKRG) – A Loxley police officer shot and killed a 74-year-old man after he pointed a gun at them, according to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the BCSO Major Crimes Unit, officers were called to a home on Highway 90 in Loxley around 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, to check on the welfare of a “suicidal individual.”

Officers reportedly entered the home and found Glenn Dawson armed with a gun in a bedroom.

There were two other people in the room and Dawson refused to comply with orders to put down his weapon, according to a BCSO press release.

Officials said that at that point, Dawson pointed the gun at one of the officers, who then shot him in the chest.

“Officers on scene immediately initiated life-saving measures, but Glenn Dawson succumbed to his injuries a short time later,” the press release states.

News 5 has learned that the BCSO is investigating the incident independently and with the help of investigators “outside the agency.”
