GoFundMe campaign set up for family of woman killed in car crash in Elyria

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been launched to cover funeral expenses for a woman who died in a two-vehicle crash in Elyria on July 7.

Joseph Carter, Sherry Taylor’s son, set up the account “Support for Sherry Taylor’s Family After Tragedy” on July 10.

The family wants $15,000 and as of the morning of July 10, $320 was in the account from 11 donors.

Carter wrote that Taylor was on his way to pick up his aunt from work.

The aunt waited and called Taylor several times, but she didn’t answer.

After two hours the aunt called an Uber.

Shortly after she arrived home, she received a call from the Elyria Police Department that Taylor had been involved in a car accident.

According to a press release from the Elyria Police Department, Elyria Police officers were called to a one-car crash at the intersection of North Abbe Road and State Route 57 at 10:05 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers observed a 2011 Ford Escape traveling south on North Abbe Road toward Route 57.

At the same time, a 41-year-old man was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer north on Route 57 toward North Abbe Road.

Both vehicles continued into the intersection, where the Explorer struck the driver’s side of the Escape, the press release said.

The driver of the Explorer and his passenger, a 40-year-old man, were taken to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center with unknown injuries.

Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the Explorer failed to stop at a red light at the intersection and collided with the Escape, the press release said.

After the collision, the Explorer continued driving in the northbound lane and overturned on its roof.

It is suspected that alcohol was a cause of the accident.

Charges are still pending.

“My mother was not just a mother; she was a grandmother, a wife, an aunt with a beautiful soul,” Carter wrote. “She wouldn’t hurt a fly. She was just dealing with the loss of my sister, her daughter on January 22, 2024, who was only 28 years old and left behind her four grandchildren. My mother did not deserve this.”

“She was preparing to graduate from LCCC (Lorain County Community College) in the fall with a degree in social work. She was always trying to help others and this was definitely the right career for her. Our family needs help.”
