Atlanta United Eliminated From US Open Cup By Indy Eleven

Around the 78th minute, some Atlanta United fans began chanting, “Please score a goal, please score a goal, please score a goal.”

“I think we’re in a decent position and I feel like we’ve seen it all season, but we’re not scoring goals as often as we want and we should,” Firmino said. “It’s so difficult for us to score and teams score goals easier than us and we’re always chasing the game. It’s definitely something we need to work on.”

The only other highlight of the game was the chanting and cheering for Caleb Wiley, who likely played his last game for Atlanta United. He will join the U.S. team that will compete in the Olympics. By then, his move from Atlanta United to Chelsea is expected to be finalized, according to information provided by club vice-president Carlos Bocanegra before the game.

Valentino’s lineup consisted of Firmino up front, Tyler Wolff, Saba Lobjanidze, Tristan Muyumba and Jay Fortune in midfield, Wiley and Ronald Hernandez as full-backs, Stian Gregersen, Efrain Morales and Luis Abram as centre-backs, and Josh Cohen in goal.

Atlanta United found themselves down 1-0 in the 31st minute on a goal by Augustine Williams, who deflected a cross. Indy Eleven took advantage of a loss of the ball by Atlanta United’s Muyumba near midfield and two passes later, one from Benjamin Ofeimu to Douglas Martinez on the right flank and one from Martinez to Williams to run behind the Atlanta United backline, and Indy Eleven took the lead.

To protect this lead, Indy Eleven were able to play defensively and compactly, making Atlanta United’s challenge more difficult.

Atlanta United failed to score a shot on goal in the first half. They created three chances.

Atlanta United had two penalty kicks in the 56th minute, when Dax McCarty, Matt Edwards and Luke Brennan replaced Muyumba, Wolff and Wiley, who received a standing ovation followed by chants of “Ca-leb Wi-ley.”

Brennan’s header from six yards in the 63rd minute was Atlanta United’s best chance up to that point, but the shot was pushed over the crossbar. A shot from Firmino was saved in the 70th minute.

Daniel Rios replaced Lobjanidze in the 71st minute as Atlanta United looked to equalize.

Indy Eleven’s second goal came from an own goal awarded to McCarty in the 83rd minute.

Atlanta United still has two trophies to claim: the MLS Cup and the Leagues Cup. The team is in 10th place in the East, one spot below the playoff line. The Leagues Cup is scheduled to begin on July 26. Given Atlanta United’s inability to defeat a team from a lower division, it seems unlikely that they will be able to make it past a tournament that includes teams from MLS and LIGA MX.

Valentino said he did not think players were negatively affected by the loss of quality players.

He said he spoke to the players several times, telling them that players would come and help them, but that they would not even be able to play until the transfer window opened on July 18. He shared with them a quote his wife told him: “Be where your feet are.”

Valentino said he wants to maximize everything he can with the players he has.

“We’ve got games to play,” “Nobody’s going to feel sorry for me, or the staff or the players, because you’re not winning games or you’re winning games. There’s not going to be any emotion one way or the other. You’ve got a game to play and you’re supposed to win. Nobody cares that nobody’s here.”
