Three teammates killed in early morning crash in Prince George’s County

Three former football players from Wise High School in Prince George’s County were killed in a crash Saturday morning. Maryland State Police said it was about 3:15 a.m. when a 23-year-old driver in a silver Infiniti attempted to change lanes at a high rate of speed on Route 4 and Presidential Parkway north of Dower House Road in Upper Marlboro. Police believe the Infiniti struck the maroon Dodge Charger all three men were in before hitting a Chevrolet Impala. State Police said 24-year-old Khyree Jackson, 23-year-old Isaiah Hazel and 24-year-old Anthony Lytton Jr. were in the Dodge Charger when it was struck by the Infiniti. The impact caused the car to leave the road and strike several tree stumps before coming to a stop, police added. Hazel was the driver, Jackson was in the passenger seat and Lytton was in the back seat. The trio were teammates on the Pumas’ 2016 state championship team. “I love them and wish I could tell them again,” said Steve Rapp, who coached the three as an assistant at Wise High School. “We stand by ‘Once a Pumas, always a Pumas.'” Look, man, the legacy of these guys will live on forever. Jackson was also one of the Minnesota Vikings’ newest rookies in the NFL. He was drafted in the fourth round out of the University of Oregon to play cornerback for the purple and gold. Investigators said Hazel and Jackson died at the scene of the crash, while Lytton later died at the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center. Police also said the driver of the Infiniti had two other passengers in the car, but no one was injured in that vehicle. There was only one driver in the Chevrolet Impala, who was also uninjured and refused medical treatment at the scene of the crash. Among others, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell issued a statement following the news: “I am absolutely devastated by this news. Khyree brought an infectious energy to our facility and our team. His confidence and engaging personality immediately attracted his teammates,” O’Connell said. “In our short time together, it was obvious that Khyree would develop into a great professional football player, but more importantly, what was impressive was his desire to become the best person he could be for his family and those around him. I am at a loss for words. My condolences go out to Khyree’s family, friends, teammates and coaches. Investigators believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the accident, but have not yet confirmed that. As for charges related to the accident, police say all are pending. Three former football players from Wise High School in Prince George’s County were killed in a traffic accident on Saturday morning.

Maryland State Police said it was around 3:15 a.m. when a 23-year-old driver in a silver Infiniti attempted to change lanes at a high rate of speed on Route 4 and Presidential Parkway, north of Dower House Road, in Upper Marlboro. Troopers believe the Infiniti struck the maroon Dodge Charger in which all three men were riding before hitting a Chevrolet Impala.

State police said 24-year-old Khyree Jackson, 23-year-old Isaiah Hazel and 24-year-old Anthony Lytton Jr. were in the Dodge Charger when it was struck by the Infiniti. The impact caused the car to veer off the road and strike several tree stumps before coming to a stop, police added.

Hazel was the driver, Jackson was in the passenger seat and Lytton was in the back seat.

The trio were teammates on the Pumas’ state championship team in 2016.

“I love them and wish I could tell them again,” said Steve Rapp, who coached the three as an assistant at Wise High School. “We stand by ‘Once a Cougar, always a Cougar.’ Look, man, the legacy of these guys will live on forever.”

Jackson was also one of the newest rookies for the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL. He was drafted in the fourth round out of the University of Oregon to play cornerback for the purple and gold.

Investigators said Hazel and Jackson died at the scene, while Lytton later died at the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center.

Police also said that the driver of the Infiniti had two other passengers in the car, but no one was injured in that vehicle. The Chevrolet Impala had only one driver, who was also uninjured and refused medical treatment at the scene.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell, among others, released a statement following the news:

“I am absolutely devastated by this news. Khyree brought a contagious energy to our facility and team. His confidence and engaging personality immediately attracted his teammates,” O’Connell said. “In our short time together, it was obvious that Khyree would develop into a great professional football player, but even more impressive was his desire to become the best person he could be for his family and those around him. I am at a loss for words. My condolences go out to Khyree’s family, friends, teammates and coaches.”

Investigators believe that alcohol may have been a factor in the accident, but have not yet been able to confirm this.

Police said all charges related to the accident are currently pending.
