Citrus County Fire Rescue instructor killed in July 4 boating accident

CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. (WFLA) – Citrus County Fire Rescue announced that one of its training leaders was killed in an off-duty boating accident on July 4.

A press release from the CCFR states that Captain Michael Fletcher, 42, was on the Crystal River at the time of the incident, but details of the incident are not yet known.


“Captain Michael Fletcher was a pillar of our department, known for his dedication and compassion,” said Fire Chief Craig Stevens. “His loss will be deeply mourned by all who had the privilege of working with him.”

According to the press release, Fletcher worked for the Marion County Fire Department for about 20 years and for the Citrus County Fire Department for six years.

During his time as a CCFR instructor, he taught firefighters safety and rescue standards.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of a Citrus County citizen, Captain Michael Fletcher,” said County Administrator Steve Howard. “I extend my deepest and most sincere condolences to Captain Fletcher’s family and every member of Citrus County Fire Rescue for the loss of a brother.”

At the time of this report, details of Fletcher’s memorial service had not been finalized.
