28-year-old Oakland man hit and killed by train in Berkeley

A man who trespassed on the railroad tracks in Berkeley was struck and killed by a train Wednesday evening, authorities say.

The man was identified as Malik Cross, 28, of Oakland, the Alameda County coroner’s office said Thursday.

The passenger train was traveling from Los Angeles to Seattle when it struck the man at 10:50 p.m., Amtrak said.

No injuries to train passengers or crew were reported. The train was stopped for 2.5 hours during the investigation.

“Amtrak is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident,” an agency spokesman said.

The Federal Railroad Administration has identified trespassing as the leading cause of fatal railroad-related accidents in the United States.

“These incidents can affect everyone involved – the injured and dead and their families, our train crews and our passengers,” Amtrak said. “They are also an important reminder of the importance of following the law and using extreme caution at railroad tracks and railroad crossings.”
