One dead after accident between pedestrian and semi-trailer on I-70

CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Clay County Coroner is working to identify the remains of a male pedestrian who was struck by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 70.

According to Indiana State Police, the incident occurred at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning at the 22 mile marker of westbound I-70 in Clay County. The investigation was interrupted by thick fog in the area, forcing cleanup crews to delay their investigation for safety reasons. Police waited until the fog cleared, then closed the road at 8:40 a.m. for just over an hour while the investigation continued.


Investigating officers found that a pedestrian was walking in the right lane of westbound I-70 when he was struck by the truck.

The driver of the semi-trailer immediately stopped and called 911. According to police, the driver cooperated with the investigation.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released. ISP said Clay County Coroner Nick French is currently investigating to determine the identity of the pedestrian.

ISP was assisted on site by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department, Posey Volunteer Fire Department, STAR Ambulance, INDOT and the Clay County Coroner’s Office.

The ISP said the investigation is still ongoing and no further information can be released at this time.
