The last two autopsies of the police officers killed in the East Charlotte shooting in April released

CHARLOTTE (NEWS FROM QUEEN CITY) — Final autopsy results have been released for two of the four police officers fatally shot while attempting to execute a warrant in east Charlotte.

On Wednesday, June 26, the Mecklenburg County Coroner’s Office released the autopsies of CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer, 31, and Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weekes Jr., 48.

Both officers were serving on a U.S. Marshals Service task force when they were shot along with 42-year-old NC Department of Adult Corrections Investigator Samuel Poloche and 46-year-old NC Department of Adult Corrections Investigator William Alden Elliott in the 5000 block of Galway Drive in east Charlotte on Monday afternoon, April 29.

According to the report, Officer Eyer suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen. He was shot in the back and right chest. The report states that the bullet was found in his body.

CMPD Chief Jennings said Eyer was a hero who put himself in danger to help his colleagues. He died after fighting for his life at the hospital, authorities said.

According to the second released medical examiner’s report, Weeks Jr. suffered a gunshot wound to the chest in the fatal shooting.

The autopsy revealed a gunshot wound to the chest, blunt force trauma and an enlarged heart. The report says Weeks Jr. was shot in the front left upper chest. Part of the bullet exited his body and a projectile fragment was found in a lung, the report said.

The suspect, Terry Clark Hughes Jr., used a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle and a .40-caliber pistol during the April shooting. He was shot and killed by police in the front yard of the home.

All four police officers have now been laid to rest, and their families have received support from across the Carolinas and across the country.

Various organizations have made donations to the families of the fallen officers and to the relevant authorities.
