Carbon County murder/suicide under investigation

Law enforcement in Carbon Country is still investigating a June 12 incident near Silesia that may have been a murder/suicide.

At around 9:30 p.m., Carbon County Sheriff’s officers responded to a residence north of Silesia to check on the residents’ well-being.

The review had been requested by friends who were unable to contact the residents after receiving a disturbing email from the man living in the home.

When officers arrived, they found an adult woman and an adult man inside the home, both dead from gunshot wounds.

After examining the crime scene on Thursday and completing autopsies on both subjects on Friday, investigators were able to determine that 70-year-old Jerry Leggate first shot his wife, 62-year-old Laura Leggate, before shooting himself on Friday afternoon, June 7.

The Montana Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigations assisted in the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing.
