The investigation into the cause of the fatal crash in Grand Traverse County is ongoing

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) — Investigators continue to investigate the cause of a fatal crash in Grand Traverse County on Friday.

It happened on County Road 633 in Mayfield Township.

The Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the crash.

They said they weren’t sure whether speed or alcohol played a role in the crash, and they didn’t know when that would be determined.

“In this case, given the extent of the damage to the vehicles, it certainly makes it more difficult to gather some of that information,” Capt. Brandon Brinks said. “As far as the timeline for completion goes, there are many factors at play…It will take some time to sort through the evidence and information we have.”

UpNorthLive asked if fees would be possible in this case.

“If during the course of the investigation we find that one of the drivers did something that is not legal, a report will be prepared and sent to the district attorney’s office,” said Captain Brinks.

Sam DeKuiper, 22, died in the crash.

What investigators currently know is that a pickup truck was in DeKuiper’s lane and struck his car head-on.

DeKuiper was a graduate of Traverse City West. He was quarterback of the football team and pitcher of the baseball team. He then played baseball at Lawrence Technological University.

The school’s baseball coach released a statement saying, “Sam was a friend to everyone he met and he was always willing to help others whenever called upon.” That was the epitome of what we all strive for. Caring, selfless, loyal, honest and ethical. There is no question that we are all better for having Sam in our lives.
