Rikers Island inmate faces multiple charges, including sexual harassment

Bronx, New York:—Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark has announced the indictment of Kelvin Williams, 34, an inmate at Rikers Island, on multiple charges stemming from an alleged assault on a transgender inmate. The charges include sexual assault, first-degree sexual offense and first-degree sexual abuse, among others.

The incident reportedly occurred on the evening of May 12, 2022, at the Anna M. Kross Center, where video surveillance recorded Williams pacing before entering the victim’s cell. He allegedly threatened the victim with an improvised ice pick and gave her the cruel choice of being stabbed or sexually assaulted. Williams is accused of then forcing the victim to perform oral and anal sex.

Williams was arraigned on June 18, 2024, and remanded in custody by Bronx Supreme Court Judge Brenda Rivera. His next court date is scheduled for September 17, 2024.

District Attorney Clark emphasized the seriousness of the charges, stating, “Sexual violence against individuals in prison will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.” Lynelle Maginley-Liddie, director of the New York Department of Corrections, also condemned the acts and reiterated the department’s zero-tolerance policy toward all forms of sexual abuse and sexual harassment in its facilities.

  • Carnival in New Jersey: Unsupervised youths must buy tickets

MONROE TOWNSHIP, NJ—Monroe Township Police have announced increased security measures for the upcoming annual Our Lady of Peace Carnival to ensure a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for all participants. This decision is in response to recent unrest at local events.

The Police Department will enforce a zero-tolerance policy toward disruptive behavior and will immediately evict or arrest anyone causing the disturbance. Officers are instructed to proactively address potential problems based on past interactions or observed behavior to prevent escalation.

This year, the event will be surrounded by a fenced-in area with two designated entrances. Additional safety protocols include a ban on face coverings and mandatory checks of backpacks and bags by security or church staff.

Eligibility requirements have been updated: visitors under 18 and over 107 cm tall must purchase an unlimited nightly wristband for $30 or a weekly Mega Pass for $55. Exceptions are made for people with disabilities, and parents can still purchase single-ride tickets for young children on a case-by-case basis.
