Three dead after boat capsizes on Banister Lake in Halifax County

HALIFAX COUNTY, Virginia. – Three men died Sunday after a boat capsized in Halifax County, according to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.

We were informed that at 8:41 p.m. on Sunday, DWR received a report from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office of a capsized boat on Banister Lake and three people were missing.

According to officials, preliminary investigation indicates the three people were fishing in a 14-foot aluminum jon boat when the boat operator maneuvered the boat sharply, causing the stern of the boat to drop below the waterline. We’re told this caused the stern of the boat to sink and the three people to be thrown into the water.

Zacharich S. Carter, 20, of Virgilina, Dre’ D. Tucker, 30, of Halifax, and Elijah Tucker, 22, of Indian Trail, NC, all died at the scene.

According to DWR, none of them were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.

The incident remains under investigation.
