DD2 band leader’s teaching license revoked after bringing alcohol onto campus

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCBD) – A woman has had her teaching license revoked after bringing alcohol onto the campus of Gregg Middle School in Dorchester County.

The South Carolina State Board of Education has decided to suspend Hannah Maile Carlson’s teaching license for one year. The one-year suspension began on Tuesday.

According to State Board of Education records, Carlson told the school nurse on March 23, 2023, that she had recently fainted. The school administration and school resource officer went to the nurse’s office to check on Carlson.

When they arrived, they said she smelled strongly of alcohol and noticed her water bottle contained alcohol. After a search, employees found empty and full alcohol containers among Carlson’s belongings, the state agency said.

At the time, Carlson was the band director at Gregg Middle School in Dorchester School District Two (DD2). News 2 has asked if Carlson is still employed at DD2 but has not yet received a response.

“The Council of State considers that the evidence presented shows that Ms. Carlson behaved unprofessionally,” the documents state.

After the suspension expires, Carlson must reapply for her certification with the South Carolina Department of Education’s Office of Educator Services.
