Who is Kevin Scott Gray? SVP could come to Stanislaus County

Kevin Scott Gray is a convicted child molester who committed crimes in Stanislaus County in the 1980s and 1990s.

STANISLAUS COUNTY, Calif. — A convicted sex offender could be released in Stanislaus County, and prosecutors and a local senator are doing everything they can to prevent that from happening.

Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil (D-Jackson) says she is angry that Kevin Scott Gray may be released. According to the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office, Gray is a convicted child molester and has been identified as a sexually violent predator (SVP).

According to court documents, Gray was convicted of sexually abusing a nine-year-old girl in Los Angeles County in 1974 and of having sexual contact with an eight-year-old girl in Wyoming in 1979. His crimes continued in Stanislaus County in 1986, where he was convicted of sexually abusing an 11-year-old and an eight-year-old girl in 1993.

He has been behind bars ever since, and in 2020 a psychologist at the Department of State Hospitals (DSH) diagnosed him with a “pedophilic disorder” and said he was a danger to others.

“A very credible psychologist has already determined that Mr. Gray has a very high likelihood of reoffending,” said Senator Alvarado-Gil.

In September 2020, Liberty Healthcare, a company contracted by DSH, recommended Gray’s conditional release. Liberty is currently seeking housing for Gray in Stanislaus County.

“The site Liberty Healthcare is now considering is a densely populated area in the neighboring city of Turlock,” said Senator Alvarado-Gil.

Liberty Healthcare and DSH declined to give an interview to ABC10. A DSH spokesperson said only that due to privacy laws, they cannot release patient information, but they are committed to providing effective treatment in a safe environment and ensuring public safety.

“Liberty Health is making these decisions without considering the overall impact,” said Senator Alvarado-Gil.

It is still unclear where exactly in Turlock Liberty Healthcare will conduct the evaluation.
