Woman killed in Monroe County car crash was UB student

BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) — The University at Buffalo (UB) says a woman who died in a traffic accident in Monroe County earlier this month was a student at the school.

It happened on June 2. Maria Eichas was 18 years old when her vehicle was struck by another driver on Burritt Road in Parma. She was pronounced dead at the scene, reports our Rochester sister station WROC.

The Spencerport High School graduate was a student at UB’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. According to UB, she studied in the school’s Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

“The University community learned with great sadness of the tragic death of UB student Maria Eichas, who died in a car accident in Parma, NY on Sunday, June 2. We have contacted Maria’s family to provide her with any support we can during this difficult time.

On behalf of the entire UB community, we extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Maria’s family, friends and fellow students.”

Eichas’ memorial service was held in Rochester on Monday. Grief counseling was offered to faculty, staff and students.

The driver who allegedly killed Eichas, 33-year-old Alexander Hackett, is charged with second-degree manslaughter and drunken driving, according to WROC.
