The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the death of 27-year-old Coltyn T. Nowatzke, who was being held at the La Porte County Jail (LCJ).

Around 8 a.m. Tuesday, an inmate who was housed in the same cell as Nowatzke alerted prison staff to an emergency. Corrections officers responded along with medical personnel and found Nowatzke unresponsive. Deputies and a nurse immediately began providing aid and resuscitation measures.

La Porte County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) members arrived and transported Nowatzke to Northwest Health – La Porte Campus. Nowatzke was later pronounced dead by Northwest Health medical staff.

According to a news release from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, a Michigan City Police officer arrested Nowatzke on May 3 on a probation violation/petition to vacate probation warrant issued by Supreme Court IV last month. Nowatzke was admitted to the LCJ later that evening, where he remained until Tuesday morning.

Criminal investigators were contacted and a death investigation was launched. The investigation is ongoing and no further information will be released.
