Detroit City FC makes history with MLS road stunner in USOpen Cup penalty shootout

Detroit City FC pulled off the organization’s second upset of an MLS team in the US Open Cup round of 16 on Tuesday night, as Le Rouge stunned defending champion Houston Dynamo in 11 rounds penalty shootout at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston.

DCFC goalkeeper Carlos Saldaña delivered the winning kick after USL Championship DCFC took the Dynamo for 90 minutes tied at 3 goals apiece, then two scoreless 15-minute overtime periods and the first five penalties knotted at four each, sending him to sudden death kicks. .

After five more kicks, it was that of the goalkeepers. Houston’s Andrew Tarbell went first, but sent his kick high and to the right, giving Saldaña a chance to send DCFC to the round of 16 for the first time. His kick hit down the middle, past Tarbell, to knock the team out of MLS.

DCFC will face another USL team in the Round of 16, visiting either the Indy Eleven or San Antonio FC, who will play Wednesday night, May 21 or 22.
