Current status of the investigation into the shooting incident in Chelan County

The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office has important updates regarding a shooting that occurred on May 17.

The following information was taken from a press release from the Sheriff’s Office Thursday afternoon.

Luis Rojas-Resendiz, 49, is believed to be the assailant in a bullet-ridden altercation with Filiberto Valasco-Lopez, 40, that occurred near Stayman Flats Rd. and Summer Camp Rd. in Chelan.

Valasco-Lopez and a companion were on their way to work when Rojas-Resendiz confronted them near an intersection. Shortly thereafter, Rojas-Resendiz opened fire. Although Valasco-Lopez was seriously wounded, he managed to hold on.

He and his passenger fled north, only to be confronted again by Rojas-Resendiz. As Valasco-Lopez exited his vehicle near a milestone on Stayman Flats Road, he was shot again by Rojas-Resendiz.

Shortly thereafter, Rojas-Resendiz took drastic measures. According to the sheriff’s office, Rojas-Resendiz died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Valasco-Lopez is reportedly in stable condition. The 40-year-old benefited from “life-saving trauma care” at the scene, including “four chest seals.” (Chest seals are adhesives used to stop bleeding. They are used when there is severe chest wall injury.)

His chances of survival were initially uncertain. Valasco-Lopez was initially taken by ambulance to Central Washington Hospital. He was later flown by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where his condition was critical at times.

The woman who was riding with Valasco-Lopez was not injured.

As of this afternoon, little was known about the shooting or its outcome. In a laconic May 17 press release, the sheriff’s office could reveal little information other than the date, time and location of the shooting, given the ongoing investigation.
